I collect old medical things. And I’ll continue to do this over my lifetime, so that when I retire, I can open a medical curiosities museum similar to the Mutter Museum or the Wellcome Collection.
I picked up this early 20th Century Burmese healing doll over the weekend. They were used as ritualistic puppets to relieve sickness and pain. My collection grows…
And by the way, if you know of any really amazing old medical things for sale, please do let me know. I’m interested! Old medical stuff is super interesting, mostly because it’s essentially just quackery. Keep in mind that in 1910, only about 10% of people who called themselves doctors actually graduated from medical school. We’re a very young profession, but interestingly enough, it only took us a few decades to take control of 20% of our economy.
