No matter the gladwell naysayers, he has a knack for simple eloquence.
When I spoke at Pop!Tech a few months ago, we had about an hour and a half car ride to Camden, ME from the airport. My friend who accompanied me rode up with Malcolm’s parents. She fell in love with them. One is a mathematician and one is a social scientist.
Now it all makes sense eh?
Malcolm Gladwell on meaningful work and curiosity
Since it looks as if Facebook will be the go-to social grid for the foreseeable future, I decided to implement Facebook connect as a way to leave comments on my blog. In addition to Disqus, which is a social network for online comments, you can now use your Facebook login information to leave comments on this blog.
Wow…this is amazing. A simple solution for the developing world with potential for disruption here in the States (that is, if the LensCrafters lobbyists don’t come down hard on the water and syringe industries).
My partner today said he tried on a $1200 pair of glasses today. They probably cost about $10 to make. If there’s ever an industry that needs disruption, it’s the $500 glass industry.
Brilliant water-based eyeglasses for the masses: No optician required
This question first came to me when I realized it is impossible (at least for me) to read without hearing the words in my head. So, if are deaf, what happens in your head while you read? More importantly, can you think without language?
After some research I found what you might assume, no you cannot think without language. In this way, being deaf can be MORE debilitating to development than blindness because of the lack of language.
This is where American Sign Language come in. ASL is independent from english, with different sentence structure and syntax. It is more like Chinese than english, where a single sign can convey an entire word or phrase. But, the differences between visual and spoken languages are much greater than that of English and Chinese. Because of this, a deaf individuals brain is organized differently than the rest of the population.
To make a long story short, you think and read in the language that you know, so in most deaf people cases that is sign language.
I know that I have reblog disease right now. But this is fucking fascinating. And if you have to see it in your dashboard twice… deal.
Yeah. Super interesting stuff. Thanks for the reblog addiction Mike.
A friend of mine passed away a few days ago. It’s been pretty rough. I met him while living in Baltimore through his best friend. He was a big fan of my photography. When I’d do professional shoots, Adam was always my assistant…he was a great photographer himself.
Adam was one of the smartest kids I’ve ever met. His heart was gold. He was wise beyond his years and, in my eyes, that set him apart. But in his eyes, I think he felt he was never a part of the crowd. Just prior to me leaving Baltimore, Adam started messing around with drugs.
Drugs are designed to push your body to its limits and many are manufactured under the safety and cleanliness guidelines of your local trailer park. Just think before you inject or ingest a drug. You have absolutely no idea what it is, how concentrated it is, nor how clean it is.
A year and a half and one overdose later, Adam is dead. Drugs simply kill. They kill you. They kill families. And they kill the people you leave behind who desperately wanted to help you and who, now, would give anything to have you back.
20 years old. An amazing soul. Gone.
People die. Drugs unfortunately don’t.
So my tax dollars are paying for people to be able to watch Fox News!? When did having a television become damn near a right?
If I don’t watch television, can the government give me a handout so I can buy a couple movies off iTunes?
The television bridge to nowhere.

I think this is spot on. The world is just now experiencing the dying off of the dinosaurs. We’re going to look back at this era and realize that this was the tipping point for a whole new way of transacting and communicating.
The health care industry may be somewhat protected for the next few years but will collapse because we can’t afford as a country to spend 40% of our pre-tax income on health insurance premiums. And this will occur in 8 years. It will change drastically and I have a feeling that the Internet will have something to do with this.
