change:healthcare
Change Healthcare is doing amazing things to expose actual healthcare prices to consumers. For all of you non-healthcare people, this data is highly prized and kept secret by absolutely every player in the industry. Everyone benefits by keeping these prices private — except consumers and especially people who have to pay cash for their own healthcare. Check out the press release here but...
Why Big Health Insurance Supports the Democrats →
Some very interesting insight here… “DrRich’s theory, first formulated six months ago, provides the answer. In the evolution of their managed care products, health insurers finally have reached the point where they need to demonstrate their ability to grow their profits by actually managing the medical care of sick people. The notion that they can do so is, of course, absurd....

TOMORROW 8 PM EST: I'll be live chatting at MDNG →

How applications will push Apple iPhone users to... →
This is the real revolution (or maybe evolution) of computing. Windows “owned” the antiquated desktop, corporate computer in the past 15 years but Apple will own the next generation of computers and it’s operating system will be the iPhone. The iPhone enables a truly mobile full-powered computer experience that, most importantly, is located anywhere you are. Social networking...

Absolutely amazing. This person “drew” a self-portrait using a suitcase with a GPS device along with the help of DHL.

Innovation is only beneficial if those who create are given free reign to implement their creations. If Napster didn’t exist, would we have iTunes? Unfortunately, the wireless providers are not going to let their wireless networks go the way of their uncontrolled and uncontrollable wired networks. They can’t make a profit off something they can’t control. This is what scares...
Inconvenient Truths: Get Ready to Rethink What It... →
This has to be one of the greatest articles written in quite some time. The “Green Movement” falsehoods remind me of the Pharmaceutical marketing machinations. Both industries have become hot sellers by taking advantage of the complexities of the issue, creating products or services that claim to solve problems, but essentially selling snake oil. Please…everyone should read...

CALIFORNIA: With only one vote to spare the state Senate approved a bill that allows greater access to cost and quality transparency in health care, a bill for which Aetna took a lead role in advocating. The measure would ban hospitals and providers from precluding health insurers to disclose cost and quality information to its members. A few large hospital systems are using their market presence...

Processing, a fairly new open source language written by Ben Fry, is one of the coolest things out there right now. It’s a perfect mix of art and science. Scroll down to see those examples…it’d be a shame if you didn’t. I sent Ben Fry an email about a week ago asking if he’d want to come on the Myca team as a consultant to help create perfect data visualizations in...

The reason I became a doctor...
I stopped seeing new patients officially around January 1 because I’m not in town enough and too busy building Hello Health to take on new patients. In mid-June, when Hello Health launches, I will officially start seeing new patients again. But when I’m in town and my day isn’t chock full of meetings, I occasionally see patients. Today I saw a lovely young woman who was...

How Amazon Could Change Publishing →
I know this isn’t extremely profound thinking but Amazon would be in the perfect position to revolutionize the book industry. However, according to Steve Jobs “People don’t read books anymore!” When I started my practice, I immediately had two book offers from two publishers who regularly populate the New York Times best seller list. I figured my story wasn’t yet...
Digg User Comments on Google Health →
Here are the comments from Digg so far (a little snapshot of what the non-medical internet crowd is thinking): “Dubious. Log into your google acct and check it out for yourself. Uploading and sharing medical files online with 3rd party sites? Google selected doctors? Sharing all of my medical history on the interwebs..with the man? Yea, I’m cool off that.” “From a...
I absolutely love Keith Olbermann as one of the last members of the mainstream media who is willing to speak the truth. I know it’s over twelve minutes long, but it’s a heart-wrenching attack and worth every painful moment.
Google Health →
Google Health was officially launched today. It’s an uphill battle even for Google when the whole industry is locked into proprietary legacy systems that won’t want to, nor have any financial incentive to, interact with Google. I applaud Google for attempting Google Health. It’s a step in the right direction down a long road that will hopefully lead to a better organized...
The Medical Home: Pull the RUC Out →
Interesting observations about the Medical Home model. Although this is theoretically nice, primary care doctors are damn near powerless against the industry and specialists. It’s a long road ahead and I don’t think payment reform will happen in the next ten years. There are just too many smart people in the industry and too many golden geese laying too many golden eggs.

Here’s my second cover article in a big Healthcare Industry magazine. I’d like to think I’m a better looking person than that photo…but vanity is one of the seven deadliest sins so I’ll just let it slide.

I’m very happy to announce that the “Doctor’s Unite” campaign has officially launched. One of the main organizers of the campaign is Dr. Sean Khozin, an internist and my colleague who joined the Myca team about three weeks ago. My friend Jason Kottke is live-blogging at the New Yorker Conference. Here are his two standout points:1. Newsom talked about building filling stations for electric cars that relied on exchanging batteries instead of plugging in and waiting for your car to charge. You don’t need to own your particular battery. 2. In SF, he’s hoping to exchange the payroll tax for a carbon tax. In his...
